A snicker chocolate bar stuffed with alkaline batteries. Plain and simple. Inspired by my experience joining Canon Photomarathon – the fatigue, the chaos and the rush to get the advantage of taking the shot. It was very exhausting. The crowd was huge. Though a bit dragging as participants need to wait for the rest to download before the next theme is given, and there was no strict implementation of submission time – late were still accepted. Wish they abide by their own rule. Anyways, it was fun. And hopefully we can save enough money to buy ourselves a mini-studio (a mobile one) to compete to those who bring theirs together with assistants and models.

After a gruesome battles and the dust finally settled, here is a brief what happened at Canon PhotoMarathon 2009!

I am arrived at 6.30am at Suntec exhibition hall, people started flowing in. Below are the views of how the place looks like.

The attendance this year is breaking Guinness Book of Record! It’s thousands!

Below is the throng after the first theme been announced.

I want to focus more on what I’ve shot rather than the event itself, so here we go.

There are total three themes given with durations about three hours in between, but the event itself dragged till almost 10pm!

The first theme is

TOGETHERNESS

Personally, I like an indirect approach of the theme rather than “in your face” approach like people holding hands, a group taking photos which very normal. I named this photo ” Father and sons” because you can see the togetherness of the piano keys strengthened by the brand of the piano itself that emphasized a family business.

Second theme was…

Motion

I named this photo ” Running Shadow.” Honestly, I picked up this multiple exposures skill on the spot, so this is the best I can get within the time and places constrain. I can’t find a plain wall within the mall premises. The grainy marble wall worsen the effect, not to mentioned there is a distortion in this picture (notice the horizontal metal lines are distorted?) I will practice harder to get a better result of this technique soon. Thats a promise.

The third and the last theme is…

ENERGY

After the disappointed result of the second theme, I’ve decided to go all out on the last theme.

I named this photo ” Bull’s Energy” The message is very simple and straightforward. A model walk away after drank Red Bull Energy Drink. The metal can are smashed to give the effect of the result of the energy drink. The composition is the tricky part and inspired by action movies.

This photo was taken at the carpark basement and the camera was placed on the floor. Due to traffic of cars getting in and out, busybody passerby, this photo consumed a lot of time, but thank God I managed to finished it on time and still got time to help others.

So, overall I feel very happy with the event (even though I found it quite draggy and I didn’t win anything.) I’ve met with numbers of new photographers, picked up new skills and photography tips from the experts. I’ll make sure that I am much prepared next time when an event like this happened again.
